Fix it:
- Double-check the server address and port — make sure you typed it exactly right. A single wrong character will fail. Most servers use port 25565 (default), but some use custom ports
- Check if the server is online: try the address at mcsrvstat.us — it'll tell you if the server is reachable and how many players are on

- For modded servers, make sure you have the exact same mods/modpack version as the server
