Rust won't launch because of an EAC (Easy Anti-Cheat) error — either a popup saying EAC failed to initialize, or the game crashes immediately with an anti-cheat error.
Fix it:
- Repair EAC: go to your Rust install folder (Steam > Rust > Properties > Installed Files > Browse), find the EasyAntiCheat folder, run EasyAntiCheat_Setup.exe, select Rust from the dropdown, click Repair Service
- Whitelist the entire Rust AND EAC folder in your antivirus. Windows Defender, Avast, AVG, and Norton all love to quarantine EAC files
- Verify game files on Steam: right-click Rust > Properties > Installed Files > Verify Integrity
- Make sure the EAC service is running: press Win+R, type services.msc, find 'EasyAntiCheat' service, make sure it's set to Manual and can start
- Delete the EAC folder in Rust's install directory, then verify game files — Steam will redownload a fresh copy
- Disable Steam Overlay: Rust > Properties > General > uncheck 'Enable the Steam Overlay'
- Run Steam as Administrator
- If you recently updated Windows, EAC might need a fresh install: uninstall EAC from the setup exe, verify game files to reinstall
- Make sure Secure Boot is enabled in BIOS — some EAC games now require it
