System File Corruption / SFC and DISM Guide
What is this error?
Windows system files are corrupted, causing random crashes, errors, and instability. Guide to using SFC and DISM to repair.
Common causes
- failed Windows update
- sudden power loss during file write
- malware damage
- disk errors corrupting files
- aggressive 'optimization' software modifying system files
How to fix it
- Run DISM first
- then SFC
- If both fail
- run an in-place Windows repair upgrade
Too many steps? Crashless can diagnose this automatically — checks your drivers, temps, VRAM, and 400+ known error patterns.

Corrupted Windows system files cause random crashes, missing DLL errors, and unstable behavior across all games and apps. SFC and DISM are built-in repair tools.
How to repair system files:
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator (right-click Start > Terminal (Admin))
- Run DISM first (repairs the component store that SFC uses): 'DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth' — this downloads fresh copies from Microsoft. Takes 10-30 minutes
- Then run SFC: 'sfc /scannow' — this checks and repairs system files using the component store. Takes 5-15 minutes
- Read the SFC output: 'Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them' = fixed. 'Could not repair some files' = DISM may need to run again or Windows may need deeper repair
- Restart after both complete
- If SFC keeps finding corruption that it can't fix, your disk may be failing — check with CrystalDiskInfo
- For persistent corruption: do an in-place Windows repair upgrade — download the Windows ISO from Microsoft, mount it, run setup.exe, choose 'Keep personal files and apps'. This replaces all system files while preserving your data
- Prevention: use a UPS to prevent sudden power loss, and don't use 'system optimizer' tools that modify Windows files
When to seek help
